October is Coming: A Hectic Witch's Guide to Making the Most of Witchy Season

There is something about October that makes even ordinary life feel a little more magical.

The air starts to change. The days get shorter. The mornings feel cooler. The leaves begin their slow transformation, and suddenly every grocery store is filled with pumpkins, cinnamon, apples, candles, and approximately 47 variations of pumpkin spice.

For witches, October can feel especially exciting.

It is the month of spooky season, harvest, divination, ancestral remembrance, cozy kitchens, longer nights, and eventually Samhain.

It can also feel like a lot.

There are rituals to do. Altars to decorate. Sabbats to prepare for. Tarot cards to pull. Herbs to gather. Candles to burn. Recipes to make. And somehow you're also supposed to remember to buy toilet paper.

So let's take a different approach this October.

You don't have to do all the witchy things.

You just have to find the magic that fits into your actual life.

October Is a Season of Change

At its heart, October is about transition.

We're moving away from the bright, expansive energy of summer and toward the quieter part of the year. Nature is letting go. The days are getting shorter. The world around us is preparing for rest.

That makes October a wonderful time to ask ourselves:

What am I ready to let go of?

Maybe it's an old habit.

Maybe it's an expectation you've been carrying around.

Maybe it's a relationship that no longer feels healthy.

Maybe it's the belief that you have to be productive every second of the day.

Or maybe it's simply the guilt you've been carrying because you haven't had time to practice witchcraft lately.

You can let that go, too.

Your practice isn't going anywhere.

You Don't Need a Perfect Witchy October

Social media can make witchcraft look incredibly elaborate.

Beautiful altars. Handmade spell jars. Shelves overflowing with herbs. Moonlit rituals in the woods. Elaborate Sabbat feasts.

And those things can absolutely be wonderful.

But they aren't requirements.

Your October might look like lighting a candle while you wash dishes.

It might be pulling one tarot card before work.

It might be drinking your morning coffee with the intention of having a peaceful day.

It might be putting cinnamon in your oatmeal and taking a moment to appreciate the season.

It might be sitting outside for five minutes and noticing that the air feels different.

That's witchcraft, too.

Magic doesn't become less meaningful because you have somewhere to be at 8 AM.

A Few Easy Ways to Bring Magic Into October

If you want to lean into the season without turning your October into another item on your already enormous to-do list, try choosing just one or two small practices.

🍎 Cook Something Seasonal

Apples, squash, pumpkin, root vegetables, breads, soups, and warm spices all lend themselves beautifully to autumn kitchen witchcraft.

You don't need a complicated recipe.

Make something you already enjoy and add intention to it.

As you cook, think about what you want to nourish in your life.

As you stir, imagine yourself stirring that intention into the meal.

As you eat, take a moment to be grateful for the food in front of you.

That's kitchen magic.

🕯️ Light a Candle With Intention

You don't need a fancy ritual candle.

Use whatever candle you have.

Light it when you need a moment of calm. Use it as a signal that the workday is over. Light it while journaling. Light it while you drink your evening tea.

The magic isn't necessarily in the candle.

It's in the meaning you give the moment.

🔮 Make Time for Divination

October is a beautiful month for looking inward.

Pull a tarot or oracle card and ask:

What am I being asked to release?

What deserves my attention right now?

What am I carrying that I no longer need?

You don't need an hour-long reading.

One card can be enough.

🍂 Take a Walk

Go outside.

Notice the changing leaves. Pay attention to the temperature. Look for acorns, pinecones, fallen leaves, mushrooms, or anything else that catches your attention.

You don't have to turn every walk into a formal nature ritual.

Sometimes simply paying attention is the ritual.

🧹 Clean One Small Space

October is also a wonderful time for energetic and physical clearing.

But please don't decide that you need to deep-clean your entire house because a witch on TikTok told you that your spiritual energy depends on it.

Pick one drawer.

One shelf.

One corner.

Clear out what you no longer need and imagine making room for something new.

Your magic room can be the junk drawer.

We don't judge here.

And Then There's Samhain

For many witches, October naturally builds toward Samhain.

Samhain is traditionally associated with the end of the harvest and the transition into the darker part of the year. Modern Pagan and witchcraft traditions observe it in different ways, and practices vary widely.

For some people, it is a time of honoring ancestors and loved ones who have died.

For others, it is a time for reflection, divination, releasing the old, or acknowledging the changing season.

And for some witches, it's simply a meaningful seasonal celebration.

There is no single way to observe it.

You might prepare a special meal.

You might light a candle for someone you miss.

You might make an offering.

You might sit quietly and remember where you've been over the past year.

You might spend the evening with friends.

You might celebrate alone.

You might do absolutely nothing formal at all.

Your practice is yours.

October Magic for the Hectic Witch

If your October is already looking like a disaster of work schedules, appointments, errands, school, family obligations, and approximately seventeen things you forgot were happening, you're not doing witchcraft wrong.

You're just living a life.

And that's exactly why I love this time of year.

October reminds us that change doesn't have to happen dramatically.

The trees don't suddenly wake up one morning and announce, Today I will become autumn.

They change slowly.

One leaf.

One cool morning.

One shorter day.

One little shift at a time.

We can do that, too.

You don't have to completely reinvent yourself this season.

You can simply release one thing.

Rest a little more.

Pay attention.

Make something nourishing.

Light a candle.

Remember someone you love.

Spend five minutes outside.

Let yourself be a little more intentional about the life you're already living.

Your October Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

If you do ten rituals this month, wonderful.

If you do one, wonderful.

If your biggest magical accomplishment is remembering to buy more coffee before you run out, also wonderful.

There is no witchcraft police coming to inspect your altar.

There is no minimum number of spells required to qualify as a witch.

There is no prize for having the most elaborate Samhain celebration.

There is simply you, your practice, your life, and the little moments of meaning you choose to create within it.

So welcome, October.

Bring us your cold mornings, your changing leaves, your candles, your apples, your cozy sweaters, your long nights, your strange dreams, your messy kitchens, and all the magic hiding in between.

And if you're a little too busy to notice it all?

That's okay.

The magic will still be there when you get a minute. 🖤🍂
